Lightning Cause Of Over 500 Fires In California
SACRAMENTO, Cali. 6/22/08-- Lightning is the cause of more than 500 fires burning around Northern California Sunday.
Rough terrain and rising temperatures have firefighters struggling to keep the blazes from spreading.
One fast-spreading blaze just miles from the heart of wine country has already scorched 5 1/2 square miles. One home is destroyed, and it's forced residents of more than 60 others to flee. More than 100 buildings are threatened by the fire, which is in an area straddling Napa County and Solano County, about 40 miles southwest of Sacramento.
Storms were responsible for as many as 75 fires in Shasta-Trinity National Forest, near Redding. They range in size from less than an acre to more than 750 acres, but no homes are thought to be threatened.
